Above is the spelling/phonics list for the week.  This week's "pattern" is three different ways to make compound words (combined, not combined, and hyphenated).  I didn't even know not combined and hyphenated were considered compound words, but I guess they are!

Mealworms:
We have started a science unit on Plants and Insects and the first activity was to give each student two mealworms to take care of!  They are kept in a small vial with bran for food and a small piece of fruit or veggie for moisture.  We've had them since the middle of January.  Some have died, but some have molted and appear to be getting ready to go into their pupa stage where they "sleep" until coming out as a darkling beetle!  Below are pictures of the classroom "habitat" they came from, and a vial of one of the student's.

Treats Committee for Valentine party:
Last week I said I would be meeting with the treats committee, but that didn't happen, so I'll be sure to get that done this week to give you a week to plan. With the chance of no school early this week, I plan to get it done on Monday!

Mid Year Testing:
We've completed the mid year testing in reading, math, and writing.  I'll be meeting with each student individually this Thursday to discuss their growth and goals for the end of the year.  Below are two graphs that show all Keystone second grade scores on CBM (Fluency) and aReading (Comprehension).  To protect confidentiality, only numbers are given to each bar.  If you'd like to know your child's number, email me and I'll send it to you.  Then you can see how your child compares to his/her peers in second grade.

This week's spelling/phonics pattern is words that end with le, el, & al.

100th Day of School
This Thursday, January 28, will be the 100th Day of School!  The students don't have to bring anything this year, but we will be doing some activities regarding the number 100.  Be sure to ask them what we did (I'll try to remember to take and post some pictures on here)!

Valentine's Day
Our Valentine Party will have to be on Friday, February 12.  It's a 12:00 dismiss that day, so I'd like to do a Valentine Breakfast theme since we'll have to have our snacks/party in the morning.  Below are the committees for theValentine's Day party.  I'll meet with the treats committee this week and send a note home to tell you what we decided for "breakfast" food.  Decorations and Game Committees don't need anything from home.  Valentine's for classmates can be brought to school during the week of February 12.  You can also use this list of names for filling out Valentine cards.

The Legend of John Henry
This week we are doing a Reader's Theater about the legend, John Henry.   We watched the following video that the kids really liked, so I said I would share it with you and maybe they could watch it again with you at home.

List, Group, Label Activity

Last week we read a book about Urban Communities and did a small group activity called List, Group, Label.  If your child hasn't already, they will bring home the completed activity in a baggie to share with family.  Please send it back in a few days so the next person can take it home!  Here's a couple pictures of some kids working in their groups:

Jan 18  No School
Jan 28  100th Day of School (maybe)
Feb 1   PTO Meeting in Keystone
Feb 3  1:00 dismiss

Today is the 86th day of school and it's hard to believe that we're almost half way through the school year!  If we don't have any weather issues that would cancel school, our 100th Day will be on January 28.  We will do some fun activities having to do with 100 that day! Then Valentine's Day will be right around the corner.  On the paper copy of my newsletter, I printed a class list on the back so that you will have the names of kids for making Valentines.  I'll send it out again as we get closer to February.

Mid-year is a time when we assess students again to see how they are growing academically.  I'll be giving them 3 reading assessments, a writing assessment, and a math assessment.  In reading I'll assess their reading level, their fluency rate, and their comprehension.  The math assessment will be over the 2nd grade priority standards.  After assessing, I'll meet with each student individually to give them feedback and set goals for the end of the year.  You will get a copy of our goal setting sheet.

Below are two "snips" cut from my paper copy newsletter.  I'm trying out something called a Snipping Tool that lets me take a picture of another document and insert into my blog.  Let me know if these two images are readable or not!  The paper copy and book order will come home today or tomorrow.
